Silk Flower Arrangements – Realistic Representations Are Possible
Silk flower arrangements are good options for people looking for a more permanent design. There are many stores or outlets that offer silk flower arrangements for sale. They can be found in many retail stores, including the big chain stores or the smaller mom & pop shops too. They are also offered from internet etailers. The choices are vast and so is the quality of the flowers and designs.
There are many reasons for choosing silk flower arrangements over real, fresh flower arrangements. Silk flower arrangements are excellent choices for environments or locations where real flowers can’t be placed because they may be hard to get to or real flowers won’t survive very long. Examples could be on ledges or shelves located very high or in spots where there are cold drafts which would cause real flowers to wilt and die prematurely. Many people choose silk flower arrangements for wreaths to hang outside on their doors or light posts. Another great thing about silk flowers is that you can find unique colors for specialized needs for which there are no real flowers to meet the need.
The new generation of silk flowers are amazingly realistic in terms of the look and feel of the flowers. There have been times when even I, as a master floral designer, has to take a double take look before realizing silk flower arrangements are imitation. The new technology behind the creation of fake flowers has created some very convincing and realistic floral stems.
The material used in many of the newer technology stems is not silk at all, and hence makes the term silk flowers inappropriate. Many new flowers consist of recycled materials including plastics and foam. Some of my favorites are actually the foam based flowers. They seem so real when viewed from a distance. As with most things, the more expensive materials typically provide the highest quality and best representation of realistic looking flowers.
Silk flower arrangements are created similarly to the way fresh flower arrangements are in terms of the style and design. There are mounded designs, traditional, contemporary, or even ichebana. In fact, there are many silk flower arrangements that rival fresh arrangements in terms of how they look and feel. Simulating real flower arrangements is much easier now with the advent of newer technology silk florals.
For those interested in creating silk flower arrangements there are courses and classes offered through many different programs. In most cases, adult continuing education programs offer silk flower arrangements as a course. Local florists may also provide training opportunities in a fun environment to the casual learner. Designing with silks requires different tools and supplies than working with real flowers, so learning from an experienced silk flower designer is suggested.
