Okay, here are a few good tips to get started in making pretty flower arrangements. These are not the only things required for good flower arranging, however they will provide a great start for making simple designs.
As a good primer and basic introduction to how to make flower arrangements, you want to begin by learning about a couple of design techniques that will serve you well in your creative floral design endeavors. These design techniques are to keep the arrangement in proportion to the vase, use greens (foliage) as a base foundation and naturalizer, and remembering that less is more.
Regarding proportion, the trick to creating an arrangement that is just the right size for the vase is to cut the flowers to be no more than 2 ½ times the width and no more than 2 ½ times the height of the vase. For instance a 3 inch by 6 inch vase should have an arrangement in it that is 7 ½ inches wide by 15 inches high.
Before arranging flowers in a vase, the arrangement should have a good base foundation consisting of greens or foliage. These greens should be trimmed such that the height is no more than approximately 1 inch above the rim and to provide proper support to flower stems when inserted into the vase (keeping the stems in place).
The last tip being shared in this post is to remember that less is often times more. If your arrangement looks too colorful, or too overwhelming and full, try to use less flowers or remove some stems to make it look better. An easy way to accomplish using just enough flowers is to design using the power of 3. This means to use 3 stems of a focal flower, 3 stems of a supporting flower, and 3 stems of a filler flower.
These three excellent tips will get you well on your way of how to make flower arrangements. Once you master these basic fundamentals you’ll then be ready to begin to incorporate other design principles and creating other design styles. Give these 3 tips a try and watch your designs begin to take better shape and provide lots of enjoyment to you and those who get to see your arrangements.
