Funeral Flower Arrangements
Choosing appropriate funeral flower arrangements depends upon particular religious or cultural customs of the deceased. There are particular styles that may or may not be acceptable, along with certain colors that may or may not be appropriate. These differ by religion and customs.
If you are unsure of what may be appropriate then it is advised to consult with the funeral home, the religious leader, or a professional florist for help. Here are a few of the common practices in the U.S. that may be helpful in selecting proper funeral flower arrangements:
U.S. Military Funerals typically have the U.S. flag draped over the casket. Therefore standing sprays or arrangements are used. In many cases, ribbons of red, white and blue are used as a sign of patriotism. It is also okay to use military symbols in the funeral flower arrangements.
When there are Cremation Services, it is generally acceptable to send funeral flower arrangements. It is suggested that you check with the funeral director, a member of the deceased’s family or your florist for guidance on how best to demonstrate your sympathy.
For those of Roman Catholic faith, it is okay to send funeral flower arrangements directly to the funeral home. The acceptable arrangement styles are standing sprays, floor arrangements, crosses or heart designs.
For Mormon funerals and burials, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Services, it is acceptable to funeral flower arrangements to the funeral home. All styles are appropriate with the exception of any designs of a cross. It is not proper etiquette to send flowers in the shape of a cross for a Mormon service.
For Protestant religions including Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and others it is commonplace to send funeral flower arrangements directly to the funeral home. All design styles are considered acceptable.
For any other special circumstances, it is best to consult with a professional florist, the funeral home director, or the religious leader for selection of appropriate funeral flower arrangements. All funeral flower arrangements are viewed by the attendees, therefore you will want to make sure to use proper etiquette in showing your sympathy.
