Flowers at Home – Mohave Pyracanthusmohave pyracantha white

As many of you already know I am a lover of flowers, plain and simple! This includes the creation of fabulous floral designs and making flower arrangements for everyone to enjoy, and also the growing of flowers at home – flower plants, flowering bushes or shrubs, and flowering trees.

This post is all about a fantastic flowering shrub named the Mohave Pyracantha. This plant is a recent addition to my plantings as having just added it this past springtime. I only wished I had captured some video of the blossoms back in the springtime.  They make great natural cuttings in a vase in the house when in bloom.  This fall it has turned into one of the most magnificent color additions on the patio – make sure to view the video at the end of this posting to see how I grow it in a unique fashion.

Before the video, let’s cover some basics about the plant itself to see if it makes a great speciment for your growing environment. The mohave pyracantha is a shrub that grows to about 6-10 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide and thrives in neutral or alkaline soil that is well-drained and positioned to receive either full sun or partial shade. It will grow well in zones up to H4 in the US – considered a hardy zoned plant.

The pyracantha is a fairly tolerant plant in many respects. It is drought tolerant and has few insect pests which enjoy its leaves as food – although they should not cause too much damage to the plant. There are specific treatments available in situations where there seems to be a major problem with the insects – just be sure to contact your local garden store for treatment products and suggestions to eliminate the pesky pests.

Something that is especially nice about this plant is that not only the leaves remain green year round, but also in the springtime it has very pretty white clustered blossoms followed by the formation of green berries which ripen into clusters of pretty orange berries in the fall. They are a perfect specimen for border plants and they respond well to trimming and shaping.

As you will see in the following video, they also grow very well in containers. I get to enjoy my mohave pyracanthus growing in a great pot on my patio – check out the video below. Another great video of my sharing my love of flowers at home (in this case, the resulting berries 2 seasons later!).
