Flower Designer – Judgement time …

A critical position in a flower shop is the flower designer.  It may be the owner, a manager, or other employee.  A flower designer by definition creates designs using flowers.  A flower designer is the person who translates and fulfills a customer’s order into a floral arrangement.  As you may have experienced, not all designs are created equal.  So what makes a good flower designer, anyway?

A flower designer is almost always judged as being good or not good based upon the product they create – the flower design.  Customer preferences will always dictate whether a flower designer is good or not.  And, the skills of the flower designer will most certainly impact a customer’s judgement call as well.

The makings of a good flower designer begins when the designer has a passion for flowers and combines that passion with just the right amount of creativity and artistic skills to create flower designs. Using the passion, creativity and artistic talents and applying them in a way to fulfill customer requirements will generally result in being judged good by the customer.

A good flower designer creates flower designs that really grab a viewer’s attention almost like a piece of artwork would.  When you’ve been pulled into a flower design, then you know something must be good about the designer who created it.

There are three types of flowers designers that can be judged as good – those that follow floral design recipes based upon designs which others originally created, those that create custom flower designs for each order, and those that do both.  A flower designer of each of these types may be judged good by a customer.  It really comes down to whether or not the resulting design is liked by the customer.

Personally, my preference is for a flower designer that creates custom flower designs for each order – the avant garde florist, the one who can push the envelope and design outside the vase.  It’s okay to see a flower design that has been done a million times but it doesn’t pull me in, instead I do love seeing unique designs that I’ve never seen before.  To me, that is a good flower designer.
