Flower Course – Find the Right One Easily
Many times I get asked for suggestions of where to find or take a flower course. This request is fairly general, however it typically is asked because of an interest in learning how to create flower arrangements at home, or to create their own wedding flower designs, etc. There are many opportunities for anyone who has an interest in learning about flowers to locate a flower course that meets their needs.
My first suggestion is always to talk to your local florist. Many times the local florist offers a mini flower course to provide guided instruction on flower arranging. These courses tend to be fun and provide the one of the best opportunities to learn about floral design. Usually these courses are offered around a theme so be sure to inquire about any specific instruction you may be looking for – for instance, how to create a centerpiece, how to create a corsage, how to create a bridal bouquet, etc.
Also very high on the list for suggestions is to contact the local adult continuing education organizations. Most of these organizations offer some type of flower course (and many times multiple courses) to students in the area. You will likely find that a local florist teaches the flower course. Adult education programs are offered from a multitude of groups including botanical gardens, flower and gardening clubs, vocational schools, centers for adult education, and parks and recreation departments of the local government.
Other places to investigate flower course offerings are the local colleges and floral design schools. Many times a flower course taught in these settings may be more focused on the student interested in developing their skills to become a florist or to enhance their already existing florist skills. However, I have seen instances where these places will also offer a flower course targeted to the casual learner.
Of course, a great tool to help you to find local programs that offer a flower course, which meets your training requirements, is to use online search capabilities. Sometimes a good local flower course may not be advertised online so use the internet in combination with making visits or telephone calls to the suggested places above.
Lastly, since working with flowers is quite tactile, it is strongly suggested that when you locate a course that interests you to make sure that it includes a lot of practical hands-on training. It will be very important to be able to immediately apply whatever the instructor teaches, plus you’ll have the opportunity for direct help from the instructor as needed.
