rbflorist windowFlorist Career – is passion for flowers enough . . .

Imagine working in an environment where everyday you are surrounded by bright, beautiful and colorful fresh flowers.  The air is full of fresh floral scents.  You moods are happy, have a love of life and your memories are fond.  This imagination can be real and fulfilled in a florist career.

Flowers have the unique ability to activate positive emotional responses from people.  How many times have you experienced or seen other people’s response when they receive flowers from another person?  The floral surprise almost always garners a big smile, feelings of happiness and positive emotions toward the person who sent or gave the flowers.  That is a result of your creativity and ability to transfer someone’s request into a beautiful design to delight the intended recipient.

When choosing a florist career for your work, it is also important to know that it does require someone with creative and artistic talents along with the passion for flowers and floral art in order to be successful.  You will also work long hours, and have to sometimes work under stressful conditions in order to meet time deadlines – especially if there is funeral work and/or wedding work involved, lest you forget about the crazy day of Valentine’s Day.  That is a day all florists have a love-hate relationship with.

Just because you may truly love flowers and have a passion for them, it does not mean that a florist career may be the best choice for you.  It takes personal creativity and artistic talents in order to be successful in the long run as a florist.  People tend to gravitate to and spend more money with florists that are the most creative.  Therefore understand and know your strengths and weaknesses before choosing a florist career.

If you are lacking the creative or artistic ‘gene’, then perhaps the florist career choice may not be for you.  To validate this, it is suggested to contact a local florist and seek a mentorship with them to validate if this career choice is right for you.  You will learn “on the job” and obtain first hand knowledge if this is a career choice that suits your abilities and interests.  If so, then you can go on and take some additional florist training courses and floral design courses to further develop your skills and possibly even receive floral design certification.

A florist career is absolutely, hands down, one of the best career choices that one can make.  It is a career choice that has the ability to positively impact not only your daily life but also every other single person who comes into contact with your flowers.  Just be sure to know your strengths and aptitudes as the florist career choice will require a combination of the passion for flowers combined with creative and artistic abilities.
