Floral School – Workshops, Classes, or Degrees?
There are numerous places who you can attend training programs to become a florist. Attending a floral school offers students the opportunity to take a variety of floral courses. Understand that there are no states or governmental certifications nor degrees required to work as a florist, however attending a floral school can enhance your learning and skills development as a florist.
Most floral schools offer everything from workshops to a multi-class curriculum based education. Depending upon your needs, how much time you want to spend in school, how intensive of a program is being offered, location, and who is teaching the course(s) will all be factors in helping you to determine the proper floral school to attend.
There are not dedicated college degrees offered for florists, however there are degree programs in related fields of study such as floriculture and horticulture. These are not the same thing as being a florist, although they will provide excellent education and training surrounding plants and flowers.
A majority of floral schools operate to teach floral design to students and are not affiliated with a formal higher educational institution. Some also offer florist shop operation instruction. These schools typically provide floral design certificates indicating that the student completed the program requirements. Note that the certificate does not indicate proficiency levels nor the individual aptitudes for success as a florist – all they signify is that the student attending the training program and has completed the sessions.
Aside from specific floral schools, students can find classes and training’s offered by local community adult education programs, local community colleges, botanical gardens, and some florists even conduct flower design classes in their shops. Be sure to look for advertisements in your local newspapers, magazines and trade journals. Sometimes you may even find floral school educational opportunities posted on the internet.
