Floral Design Schools – A Ticket To A Rewarding Career…

There are many floral design schools that provide educational opportunities for those seeking employment in a floral design capacity, or for those looking to start their own florist.  For those wanting  to be employed in a flower shop seek out specific floral design schools which have very specific courses and classes intended to train students to become floral designers.  If you are going to start your own floral design business, then you will seek out schools which provide floral design training courses as well as floral business operations courses.

It is also important to point out that all floral design schools are not equal.  Some schools have higher quality programs than others and have better reputations for preparing students for a career in floral design. The best way to pick the right floral design school for you is to conduct research and interviews. Interview your local florists and find out from them which floral design schools they would recommend and if they hire students from those schools. These interviews will give you a big clue into the better schools for you to choose from.

The last point to be made about floral design schools is that floral certificates offered by the schools may or may not carry any weight in the floral industry.  It all depends upon the school, the program of study, and whether any external organization certifies the courses or classes offered.  Most floral certificates offered by the schools are not certifications.  This is an important distinction as a certification carries a lot of weight and importance in the field while a floral program certificate typically does not.  The criteria for choosing a floral design school should not be made based upon the receipt of a floral program certificate at the end of the program as that could be quite meaningless in the real world work environment.

Some students have the misconception that they will become a certified floral designer by finishing their studies at a floral design school.  Certifications usually require practical hands on experience working as a floral designer for a certain period of time (in many cases more than 3 years), along with passing competency exams, and independent design skills evaluations by a panel of experts.  A certificate is not the same thing as certified.

Students who complete their studies at a floral design school are better positioned for a career in a floral shop than those who do not.  Floral shop owners and managers prefer to hire floral design school graduates that have positive attitudes, good work ethics, and excellent references.  If the graduate also has previous floral design experience, then it is even better!  It’s much easier to acclimate a new hire that finished floral design school to the shop specifics than it is for someone with no previous education or experience.   So choose your school carefully, learn all that you can from the program and begin your wonderful career as a floral designer.
