Floral Arrangements – Using Color Correctly
There are a few floral arrangement options when performing flower arranging by color. You can create fabulous floral arrangements by using all one color, mixing complementary colored flowers together, or choosing a color scheme based on harmony.
The choice of color creates a visual impact statement (garners attention or not) as well as sets the tone or mood by impacting peoples emotions. Consider the gift recipient, whether it is you or someone else, when choosing the color scheme. The color palette provides unlimited possibilities and your limitations are only dictated by your creativity when it comes to floral arrangements.
The most common colored design look today is the monochrome design. This is also called the modern look and consists of the use of only one color and it’s shades and tints. It can consist of a single flower type or a mix of varying flowers but all flowers must be of the single color and it’s tints or shades. So an all white arrangement consisting of all white tulips, or a mix of white rose, white lilies, and white hydrangea would fit this category. (By the way, white is actually the absence of color, but it looks so elegant in a monochromatic design!)
A second option for floral arrangements is to use colors based upon their complements according to the color wheel. When looking at a color wheel, it would be the colors opposite each other that are the complements. The easiest way to describe this choice of color design is that it is a mix of both warm and cool colors. A floral design of this color scheme would be considered a good mix of color. For instance, mixing red with green, or blue with yellow would be complementary colored theme.
A last option is to choose a color scheme that uses colors that are in harmony. Harmonious colored floral arrangements include flowers that are either all warm color, or all cool colors but not mixing warm with cool. The harmonious colors on the color wheel are those that are adjacent to each other – for example it would be yellows and oranges, or blues and purples that are in harmony with each other.
The most pleasing looking floral arrangements are created based upon the principles of color theory. You can’t go wrong color-wise when designing according to a monochromatic theme, or complementary colored theme, or a harmonious colored theme.
