I’m now back on US soil…feels good after floating and sailing for the past 10 days. In a recent post, I wrote about cruise ship flowers and expressed my disappointment with the lack of professional expertise and design skills of the hired floral personnel on the ship. Florist Education – a Critical Success Factor? …
All florists receive education at some point in their career, and some of the education will be subtle. Florist education is received through a multitude of sources. There are floral schools, florist seminars, floral conventions, certification programs, adult continuing education classes, training by vendors, visiting other florists (especially when traveling) and florist open houses to name a few.
Education comes in many forms for a florist. It can be a class with a lot of hands on practice and instruction. Floral Training – an investment into your future…
The best place to receive floral training is “on the job” from an established professional florist. Find a local florist whose has a great reputation and inquire about working for them or having them take you on as an apprentice. This way you can learn first-hand all of the proper skills you will need to develop your design skills.
In addition to gaining experience and training directly from an professional florist in a live setting, it is recommended that this be supplemented by floral training classes provided by floral design schools, local wholesaler’s, and industry organizations. These classes help provide a more formal setting with focused attention on the basics and principles of design.

Flower Training – Blossoming from Your Youth
For many people in the florist field, their flower training began at an early age. Perhaps it started so innocently by picking a nice bouquet of lovely dandelions or daisies for mom or grandma and being made a fuss over for being so thoughtful. Children learned the names of common flowers from their parents, grandparents and relatives. Children also learned that giving flowers brings joy to the person they gave the flowers to.
